The Danakil Depression formed from the continental drift of the African and Asian tectonic plates. As the plates drifted apart at a rate of 1-2 cm per year, they leave behind a geological depression, known as the Danakil Depression (or Afar Depression).
Itinerary
Flight to Mekele
Day 1
Meet the vehicle/s at the airport and drive Ertale volcano. ON camping at base of the volcano
Day 2
Morning climb to the volcano and full day at Ertale. Pass the night on the volcano, with spectacular views. Simple meals & ON in simple huts sleeping just on mattresses at open air.
Day 3
Early morning walk back to the vehicles and drive to AhmedAle. Visit on the way Afar people and villages & the camels caravans. ON camping AhmedAle or Assobole, on open air bed
Day 4
Visit Dalol spectacular colors and lakes, the Afar men extracting salt, the camel caravan and more: are amazing views, fantastic colors, really unique landscapes. Afternoon drive to Mekele on time to fly back to Addis Ababa
